The HBO Thematic Table is a platform, supported by NWO and the Taskforce for Applied Research SIA, where the government works together with the KIAs Key Enabling Technologies (KIA KET) and Digitalisation (KIA D) and with researchers at technology-focused higher professional education institutions. The platform is backed by the extensive network of nearly twenty technology-focused higher professional education institutions.
We regularly put the spotlight on a topic as an example of the work that the HBO Thematic Table does.
Big Data for craft brewers
The Avans and Leiden Universities of Applied Sciences are helping craft brewers to improve the process of brewing beer using analysis technologies, bioinformatics and data science. They are developing an affordable sensor that uses near infrared spectroscopy to monitor the fermentation process in real time. Hop and yeast products are analysed to overcome variations in the ingredients and produce a consistent beer. Even though the project is still in its infancy, it has already yielded some positive results, such as the characterisation, through innovative analysis methods, of more than 6500 components in hop samples. The research is led by Avans UAS, with support from a number of SME partners and sector organisation Craft and additional input from Leiden UAS.
